Basant Panchami is a popular Hindu festival which is also called as Vasant Panchami as well as Saraswati Puja. It is celebrated on the fifth day of the month of Magh which corresponds to the January/February in the Gregorian calender. This festival celebrates the onset of the ‘Spring Season‘ and on this day Goddess Saraswati was born. Basant Panchami is the festival dedicated to Godess Saraswati who is the Goddess of knowledge, music, learning and all arts. Yellow colour has its importance on this day as it symbolises prosperity, light, optimisim and new beginnings. The day also marks the beginning of preparation for holi which takes place 40 days afterwards. Basant Panchami 2020 celebration date is 29th January.
Story of Basant Panchami
During the creation of universe Lord Brahma, created many creatures especially human beings. But he was not happy with his creation. He felt that there was something missing because there were negativity among human. With permission from Vishnu, Brahma sprayed water from his kamandal. When Brahma sprayed water, an amazing power appeared in the form of quadrilaterals beautiful woman. She was Goddess Saraswati.
Her four hands hold book/scripts, a lotus flower, a water pot and vina with symbolic meaning. The book she holds symbolizes the vedas representing the universal, divine, eternal and true knowledge as well as all form of learning. The lotus flower she holds represents the power of meditation, inner reflection and spirituality. The water pot she holds represents the purifying power to separate right from wrong, clean from unclean. The vina she holds symbolizes musical instrument that represents all creative arts and sciences.
